Rifugio Croz dell’Altissimo

Croz dell’Altissimo mountain hut (1480 meters above sea level) is located in Val delle Seghe, at the foot of the southwest wall of the homonymous Cima Croz dell’Altissimo, along the main access road to the eastern side of the Brenta Dolomites.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, pioneers of mountaineering first explored this Dolomite Group through “Bocca di Brenta”. On the wall of 900 meters which is one of the highest and most impressive of Brenta Dolomites, the strongest and most fearless climbers tested themselves.
The shelter was built in 1962 by Felice Spellini’s parents.
A few years later, on 6 and 7 July 1974 Marco Pilati with Valentino Chini, Dario Bonetti and Felice Spellini traced the challenging and beautiful route of “Rifugio Altissimo” thanks to a series of cracks on the beautiful pillar above the shelter, it’s a beautiful rock climbing almost exclusively free.

GREAT FOOD AND A COMFORTABLE ROOM
After a hot couple of hours ascent from Molveno, taking the steep path from behind the cable car through the woods which joins the 340, we were happy to see the Rifugio suddenly appear through the trees. The main 340 path is a dramatic approach with some airy parts- quite safe but not for those who hate exposed heights. The Rifugio staff made us very welcome and we had a good meal in the evening. Bedroom was comfortable with wooden bunks and duvets and there was a bathroom just for the 8 of us as the other room was empty (it’s only got two guest rooms I think). Next morning the sun catches the hills above and it’s a great place to start up into the higher passes.

GOOD FOOD
The views are unbeatable as with the food. The simple pasta pomodoro is quite good, so says my Italian companion. Service is swift, helpful and friendly.
